Sirsi: A bandh was observed in Yellapur on Monday in protest against erratic movement of lorries carrying manganese ore, the bad shape of National Highway 63 and also to urge the authorities concerned to expedite the proposal on a bypass road and the Hubli-Ankola rail line.

As the agitators insisted that the Deputy Commissioner come to the spot, Additional Deputy Commissioner from Karwar arrived at the venue and passed a ban order on the movement of lorries on National Highway 63 passing through Yellapur town from 8 a.m. to noon and 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. till February 4.

As many as 25 social organisations had given the bandh call which evoked a positive response. Schools and colleges had closed for the day, while banks and other commercial outlets had downed their shutters. However, government buses were allowed to ply to help serve commuters. The town wore a deserted look.
