The project of renovating the historical temples at Balligave village of Shikaripur taluk was kick-started by MP B.Y. Raghavendra on Monday.

Mr. Raghavendra said the renovation project had been taken up at a cost of Rs. 2.5 crore. Balligave was a centre of learning in ancient times. It is the birthplace of poet Allama Prabhu and Hoysala queen Shantala.

The State Government was committed towards the comprehensive development of this place.

Basic amenities for the tourists would be upgraded and the road that connected Balligave would be developed, he said.

The inflow of tourists would create income generation opportunities for the local people.

Cooperation sought

He called for the cooperation from the people of the villages in the development endeavours.

Chairperson of the Malnad Area Development Board Padmanabha Bhat demanded that the Government should form a separate authority for the development of Balligave and Udutadi which had historical importance.

Zilla Panchayat members Danera Rudrappa, Eshwarappa Mallenahalli, Bangari Naik, Shantamma Premkumar, taluk panchayat president Jyoti Ramesh, and gram panchayat president Kariyamma were present.
