Sanskrit scholar Balachandra Shastri (94) died at his residence here on Wednesday.

He served as the principal of Shankara Sanskrit Pathashala for nearly 60 years. Mr. Shastri was an expert on Nyaya, Vedanta, Vyakarana and Meemamsa. His father Nagesh Shastri and grandfather Krishna Shastri were Sanskrit scholars.

Shastri was honoured with several awards including a President’s medal.

The Karnataka Samskrit University bestowed upon him a honorary doctorateand the Benaras Hindu University honoured him with Vidvat Ratna award.
