Labour and Sericulture Minister B.N. Bache Gowda, who unveiled the tricolour at the General K.S. Thimayya Stadium in Madikeri on Thursday, called upon the people to renew their pledge to foster unity and integrity of the country, a legacy bestowed upon the countrymen by the great leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi.

He was delivering the Republic Day address, an official release said here.

The people of the country had faced the challenges posed by various forces in the last 62 years since India became a republic. Supreme sacrifice of leaders such as B.R. Ambedkar and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel must be remembered, the Minister said.

The Bharatiya Janata Party Government, under D.V. Sadananda Gowda, in the State had formulated several far-reaching programmes for the development of the State and Kodagu in particular.

Of the Rs. 48.39 crore allocated for the Kodagu Zilla Panchayat this year, Rs. 30.33 crore had been spent to achieve 68.5 per cent progress. Under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, of Rs. 18 crore released to Kodagu this year, Rs. 15 crore went towards 5.50 lakh mandays.

Tableaux were taken out on the occasion by various government departments.
