The city will soon get a building dedicated to the former Deputy Prime Minister Babu Jagjivan Ram, which will host literary and cultural events and also have a centre for training civil service aspirants from Dalit families.
Addressing mediapersons here on Saturday, Virabhadrappa Halaharavi, MLA, Hubli-Dharwad East, said the estimated cost of the building was Rs. 4.5 crore.
It is coming up on a half an acre of land near New English School.
Mr. Halaharavi said that the bhavan would be completed in one-and-a-half years and would have state-of-the-art facilities. “It will have a well-equipped library, an auditorium with a seating capacity of 1,000 and a civil service coaching centre for Dalits. A bust of Babu Jagjivan Ram will be installed on the Bhavan premises,” he said.
He said the district administration, zilla panchayat, Social Welfare Department and the Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation were involved in finalising the project and the foundation laying ceremony would be held on Sunday at 6 p.m.
“Once the construction is complete, a separate committee will be formed to maintain and monitor the activities at the bhavan,” he said.
