Vedike to create awareness on terrorism

MANGALORE: The Dakshina Kannada district unit of Rashtra Rakshana Vedike will take out a rally here on Wednesday to create awareness on threats posed by terrorism. The rally, which will start at Dr. B.R. Ambedkar (Jyothi) Circle and culminate in front of Deputy Commissioner's office with a public meeting, is aimed at bringing pressure on authorities concerned to act.

Vedike convener K. Monappa Bhandary told mediapersons here on Monday that the recent terrorist strike on the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore should be an eye-opener for authorities.

This strike has created insecurity in the minds of people, he said.

Stating that the attack on IISc was pre-determined, he said it was also a challenge to the democratic set-up in the country.

A few militant groups active in Kashmir valley have gradually shifted their base to South India over the years.

Central and Army intelligence as well as people's representatives from coastal part of Karnataka have been warning authorities about such groups setting up modules and bases along coastal Karnataka.

Failure of the Centre to act on such intelligence inputs has resulted in incidents such as Mumbai blasts in the past and more are likely in the future.
