CHIKMAGALUR: With cooperation from the Education Department, steps will be taken to bring awareness among schoolchildren about child labour, said Deputy Commissioner N.S. Channappa Gowda here on Monday.

Presiding over a review meeting on the implementation of a child labour action plan, Mr. Gowda directed officials of various departments to conduct surprise raids in all taluks. He said the Assistant Commissioner will be the convenor of this task. According to information received he said children were being employed to break boulders.

With World Child Labour Eradication Week to be held from June 12 to June 19, he instructed voluntary organisations and various departments to hold preparatory meetings.

He said awareness about child labour needs to be created at the panchayat level.
