Function marred by teacher’s bid to prostrate before Minister

MANGALORE: The Teachers’ Day function organised by the Government here on Wednesday was marred by an incident in which a physical education teacher attempted to prostrate himself before B. Nagaraja Shetty, Minister for Fisheries and Endowment, while receiving the district-level teacher award for 2007-08. The Minister, who was shocked, prevented K. Cheenappa, the teacher, from doing so. Mr. Cheenappa was among the five high school teachers who were given the district-level award.

The others were K. Taranatha Rai, physical education teacher, Anandasharama High School, Kotekar, Mangalore taluk; S. Sadashiva Shetty, headmaster, Swami Muktananda Paramahamsa High School, Beluvai, Moodbidri; Vishwanatha Shetty, teacher, Government High School, Naravi, Belthangady taluk; and R. Venkatramana, headmaster, St. George High School, Nelyadi, Puttur taluk. Mr. Shetty also presented awards to seven primary school headmasters: Stella B Pais, Holy Angles Higher Primary School, Permannur, Mangalore taluk; Kabbinale Srinivasa Bhat, Sathyanarayana Higher Primary School, Niddodi, Moodbidri; M. Veerappa Gowda, Government Higher Primary School, Ivernad, Sullia taluk; U. Devappa Naik, Government Higher Primary School, Ekatadka, Puttur taluk; K. Ananthapadmanabha Holla, Government Higher Primary School, Navoor, Belthangady taluk; H.M. Ratnavathi, Government Higher Primary School, Amai, Bantwal taluk; and Mohammed Hanif, Government Higher Primary School (Urdu), Kudroli, Mangalore. Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat president’s Special Award for 2007-08 was presented to Mohammed Hussain Malar, teacher, Tipu Sultan Higher Primary School, Ullal.
