The Subhash Circle Autorickshaw Drivers' Union on Tuesday blocked the road in front of the office of the Executive Engineer of Public Works Department here demanding that the National Highway passing through Karwar should be repaired without fail.
The union members alleged that the condition of the National Highway passing through Karwar was bad. Schoolchildren and college students used the road on a daily basis. Breakdown of vehicles on the road had become common.
Whatever little that the the autorickshaw owners and drivers earned from their hard work was spent on getting the vehicles repaired, the protesters said. The union leaders said that four months ago they had staged a “rasta roko” on the highway and the officials had assured them that the road would be repaired immediately. But action was not taken, they added. The officials who received the memorandum assured the protesters that the issue would be brought to the notice of their higher-ups.
