Poor families from Sarathinagar in the city have alleged that the Ashraya houses that were built for the poor in the district have been occupied by government servants and bank employees. The residents, led by Mihir Potdar and S. Sangyagol, marched to the Deputy Commissioner’s office here on Tuesday and staged a demonstration against alleged irregularities in the distribution of Ashraya houses.
Later, they submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner, who is also the Administrator of the Belgaum City Corporation, and urged him to look into the matter immediately and ensure that Ashraya houses were given to genuinely poor families.
‘Hard life’
According to Mr. Potdar, the families who were protesting were living under adverse conditions, without proper housing. Though the government constructed houses under the Ashraya scheme for the poor, the houses were allotted to government and bank employees, he alleged.
