26 members supported Siddartha
‘Priority for infrastructure in villages'
MYSORE: In an interesting development, Congress rebel candidate S.N. Siddartha of Sosale Zilla Panchayat Constituency has been elected president of the Mysore ZP here on Tuesday.
It is significant that he defeated party nominee Siddappa of Hebbal constituency with the support of Janata Dal (Secular) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) members.
Of the total of 46 members in the ZP, 26 members supported Mr. Siddartha, three abstained from voting while one member remained neutral.
Regional Commissioner M.V. Jayanthi, who conducted the election, declared Mr. Siddartha elected. He will hold office till January 17, 2011. The election was held following the resignation of K.S. Dharmendra of Congress. The Congress which has governed the ZP for more than four years faced an embarrassment owing to the rebel candidate defeating the official candidate. In fact of the 46 members of the ZP, 31 are from the Congress.
On learning about the defeat of Congress nominee Mr. Siddappa, MPs A.H. Vishwanath and R. Dhruvanarayana disappeared from the ZP office premises.
Meanwhile, Mr. Siddartha promised to accord priority to setting up basic infrastructure in villages and ensuring impartiality while taking up development works.
