Chitradurga: “If the previous Congress government is responsible for the power crisis in the State, what has your Government done in past over two years to mitigate the problem?” This was the question posed by the Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly Siddaramaiah to Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa while inaugurating a party workers' meeting here on Tuesday.
Mr. Siddaramaiah claimed that all the present power generating units in the State were a contribution of the Congress government.
On the Union Government's proposal to set up a thermal power plant in Bijapur, he said the Government had failed to allot adequate land for it.
He said that the plant produce 4,000 MW by 2012, of which 2,000 MW would be given to the State.
Because of the Union Government's schemes such as the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGREGA), the gram panchayats received more than Rs. 1 crore a year for development works. The State Government received Rs. 4,600 crore this year under MGREGA, he added.
