The Government has issued an order naming the Karnataka Sugar Institute in Belgaum after former Chief Minister S. Nijalingappa.

Addressing presspersons here on Friday, Minister for Sugar Shivaraj S. Tangadagi said the Government had released Rs. 5 crore to the institute for constructing a new building and for other activities. The institute would come up on 10 acres. Belgaum district is one of the major sugarcane growing districts and it has 20 sugar factories.

A decision has also been taken to set up a similar institute at VC Agricultural Farm in Mandya and it would be inaugurated by December-end, he said. The Minister held a meeting with the Hospet sugar factory management and appealed to it to clear the dues of cane growers.
