A 55-year-old man riding a two-wheeler was killed on the spot when a BMTC bus ran over him after he fell and came under the wheels while trying to overtake it on Magadi Road here on Saturday, the police said.
The victim, Jai Krishna, working as an accountant in a workshop on Magadi Road, was returning home on the two-wheeler without helmet when the incident occurred.
The bus driver fled the scene abandoning the bus. Soon there was commotion when members of a city-based Kannada organisation staged a protest demanding compensation from BMTC.
The police rushed to the spot and dispersed the protesters by resorting to lathi-charge.
The protesters then blamed the traffic police constable manning the traffic junction for making an attempt to catch Jai Krishna for helmet-less riding. They said that Jai Krishna tried to avoid the constable and came under the BMTC bus.
However, Magadi Road traffic police inspector, Satyavathi, refuted the allegation stating that the accident occurred when Jai Krishna tried to overtake the bus and lost control after the bike handle touched the bus.
“We have booked a case and are investigating to ascertain the exact reason for the death,” she said.
