MANGALORE: Secretary of Construction Workers’Z Federation of India Debanjan Chakrabarthy alleged here on Sunday that multi-national companies engaged in construction works were flouting the “law of the land” with respect to welfare of construction workers. Speaking at the State-level conference of building and construction workers here on Sunday, Mr. Chakrabarthy said that the Government, to reduce its burden, allowed private participation in housing sector. As a result, more than 60 multinational companies were now engaged in house construction in the country. Those companies were exploiting the construction workers by not providing enough facilities to them.

Stating that all the States had not implemented the Central Building and Other Construction Workers Act, 1996, Mr. Chakrabarthy insisted that it should enforced in all States. Mr. Chakrabarthy criticised the UPA government for having passed the Unorganized Sector Act, 2005, without making provisions in the Budget.
