SHIMOGA: Deputy Chairman of the State Planning Board D.H. Shankaramurthy has said that the State Government has introduced several schemes for the welfare of the physically challenged.

Speaking at a seminar here on Sunday, he said special grants had been reserved to bring physically challenged persons into the main stream. He said their monthly honorarium had been increased up to Rs. 1,000.

Mr. Shankaramurthy regretted that the officials had failed to implement government schemes meant for the betterment of the physically challenged.

The officials had been reluctant to listen to their grievances, he added.

He said that showing concern to them was not enough. The main challenge was to ensure that they led lives on a par with normal people. He called upon the federation to work hard for the welfare of such people.

Basava Marula Sidda Swamiji of the Basava Kendra inaugurated the programme.

Commissioner for Disabilities Das Suryavamshi presided over the event.
