GULBARGA: Lokayukta N. Santosh Hegde has lashed out at the political and bureaucratic system in the country, which he says has resulted in the degeneration of the democratic system of governance. “Today’s democracy has lost its true meaning of government of the people, for the people and by the people.”
Mr. Hegde was delivering the 27th convocation address of Gulbarga University here on Thursday.
He said that political standards in the country had reached the nadir, and many considered politics not as a platform to serve the people but as a platform to make money. “Today’s politics has become the privilege of a few who can invest heavily and thereafter reap the returns on such investments,” Mr. Hegde said. He said the degeneration in politics had had a cascading effect on democratic government.
Referring to corruption, Mr. Hegde said that there was a mad race to acquire wealth and in this race there were no rules. “It is a myth to say corruption is only there in bureaucracy and politics. It is there in every profession”.
