He launches immunisation programme in Shimoga

SHIMOGA: The second phase of the National Pulse Polio Immunisation Programme of the financial year 2008-09 was launched in Shimoga district on Sunday with Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa administering polio drops to children below the age of five at a function held at Vinobanagar here.

The programme is being implemented jointly by the government and the Rotary International. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Yeddyurappa emphasised the need for parents to get polio drops administered to their children below the age of five to protect them from the dreaded disease which causes permanent physical disability.

Expressing concern over “misleading” reports on the safety of polio drops during the previous phase of the programme, he said that there was no substance in them.

Minister for Food and Civil Supplies Hartalu Halappa, Vice-Chairman of the National Pulse Polio Committee P. Narayan, District Surgeon Nanda Shinge, District Health and Family Welfare Officer Tippesh, members of the local Rotary clubs and officials of the Health and Family Welfare Department were present.
