MP and his followers complete one round of canvassing
Four names are doing the rounds for Congress ticket
Janat Dal (Secular) adopts ‘wait and watch’ policy
HUBLI: It is advantage Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at least as of now as far as campaign is concerned in the Dharwad Lok Sabha Constituency.
Dharwad North MP (which is part of Dharwad after delimitation) Pralhad Joshi got his name cleared in the first list and ever since his days had been hectic. According to party’s sources, Mr. Joshi and his followers had completed the first round of canvassing for the election.
Meanwhile, the Opposition parties in the State were yet to decide on the candidate to be fielded against Mr. Joshi.
Four names are in circulation for the Congress ticket.
They are former MP Manjunath Kunnur, who joined the Congress recently, the former Chief Secretary B.S. Patil, Dharwad District Congress unit president Nagaraj Chabbi and the former Minister Jabbarkhan Honnalli.
The Janata Dal (Secular) was still in the “wait and watch” mode.
Although it was suggested that the former Minister P.C. Siddanagoudar or Basavaraj Horatti should contest, it was unlikely that Mr. Horatti would contest.
Meanwhile, there was a demand for fielding a Muslim candidate.
It might be recalled that the delimitation exercise had not only changed the names of the constituencies but also drastically changed the composition of the constituencies.
The Dharwad North constituency comprised eight assembly segments of Dharwad Rural, Dharwad, Hubli, Hubli Rural, Kalaghatagi, Gadag, Naragund and Navalund. However, after the delimitation,
Naragund was included under Bagalkot Lok Sabha Constituency while Gadag came under Haveri Lok Sabha constituency.
In place of them, Kundagol, Shiggaon Assembly segments which were under Dharwad South Lok Sabha constituency have been included in the Dharwad Lok Sabha constituency now.
Shiggaon constituency had considerable Muslim population and its inclusion under Dharwad Lok Sabha Constituency ha increased the number of Muslim voters.
