Kannada writers urged to fight for the State on the issue

DAVANGERE: Many areas that belonged to Karnataka were claimed by neighbouring States and it is unfair for them to demand some more areas.

It is time Karnataka staked claim to Solapur and Kasargod, said Shyamanur Shivashankarappa, Davangere MLA and Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) treasurer.

Mr. Shivashankarappa was inaugurating the "Suvarna Karnataka Rajyothsava" celebrations here on Monday.

The S.S. Mallikarjun Yuvaka Sangha had organised the function.

The MLA said a large number of Kannadigas still live in these places. There is evidence to show that they belong to Karnataka.

A number of villages were forcibly occupied by Maharashtra on the Karnataka-Maharashtra border. Not satisfied with this, the Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti has been lobbying to get many villages of Belgaum merged with Maharashtra.

It is time Kannadigas, including writers, fought for the cause of Karnataka and Kanndigas on the issue, he said.

Sri Basava Jaya Mruthyunjaya Swamiji of Viraktha Mutt said people from Davangere always fought for the cause of Kannadigas apart from encouraging cultural activities such as theatre and dance.

Davangere City Municipal Council (CMC) President Shivanahalli Ramesh spoke. Dinesh K. Shetty, councillor, presided over the function.

District Congress Committee President Abdul Jabbar, and the former CMC presidents D. Basavaraj and Jambagi Sharanappa were present.
