I am doubly honoured, says the vocalist
HUBLI: Hindustani vocalist of Agra-Atrauli Gharana Lalith J. Rao was honoured with the prestigious “Puttaraj Samman” for 2009 here on Tuesday. Vocalist Gangubai Hanagal presented the award.
Ms. Rao is the 11th artiste to receive the national-level award instituted by Dr. Puttaraj Gawai Foundation. The award carries a cash prize of Rs. 25,000 and a memento.
Responding to the honour, Ms. Lalith Rao said that she was “doubly honoured” as the award was in the name of a great musician and she received it from a great vocalist.
Ms. Rao said that it was not an award for her, but a “blessing” from eminent persons such as Puttaraj Gawai and Gangubai Hanagal.
Addressing the gathering, Ms. Hanagal emphasised the need to promote music. She appealed to the people to develop the habit of listening to music.
Sri Gurusiddha Rajayogindra Swamiji elaborated on the contribution of Puttaraj Gawai. Speaker of the Legislative Assembly Jagadish Shettar, MP Pralhad Joshi, former Minister Basavaraj Horatti, MLC A.M. Hindasageri, Baburao Hanagal of Hanagal Music Foundation, and founder of Hanagal Foundation Manoj Hanagal participated in the function. The event concluded with a concert by Ms. Rao. Critic Sadanand Kanavalli made the introductory remarks.
