DAVANGERE: The bandh in Jagalur town in Davangere district on Monday was total, with all shops, hotels, bars and restaurants and cinemas remaining closed. Autorickshaws and private buses were off the road.

The bandh was called by the Bhadra Meldande Niravari Horata Samiti, which is demanding that the Government include drought-hit Jagalur as part of the Bhadra command area.

The samiti, in a press release, said that Jagalur was one of the most backward areas in the State and droughts year after year had not only affected farmers, but the whole local economy. The Government had not announced any ‘special package’ for the taluk, the samiti said.

The samiti also said there was no irrigation facility in any part of the taluk, and recalled that the former Chief Minister, the late S. Nijalingappa, had included Jagalur in the Bhadra command area in 1969, but was later left out.
