Production was 3.36 lakh tonnes; target was 3.57 lakh tonnes

The district produced 4,850 bales of cotton as against the target of 2,000 bales of cotton

It produced about 15,850 tonnes of pulses as against the target of 13,256 tonnes

Raichur: The district has achieved 95 per cent of its target in foodgrain production for the kharif season during 2008-09. It produced a total of 3.36 lakh tonnes of foodgrains as against a target of 3.57 lakh tonnes.

According to official sources here on Tuesday, the Agriculture Department had set a target to produce 3.57 lakh tonnes of foodgrains, including 2.69 lakh tonnes of cereals, 13,256 tonnes of pulses and 72,000 tonnes of oilseeds on 2.99 lakh hectares. It produced 3.36 lakh tonnes of foodgrains, the coverage being 2.36 lakh hectares.

In respect of cotton, it surpassed the target by 240 per cent. The target was 2,000 bales of cotton from 10,550 hectares. But the production was 4,850 bales, covering an area of 25,670 hectares.

Sources said that the target for production of cereals during the kharif season was 2.69 lakh tonnes from 1.37 lakh hectares. But production was 2.80 lakh tonnes from 1.33 lakh hectares.

A total of 2.23 lakh tonnes of paddy was produced as against a target of 1.91 lakh tonnes by cultivating the crop on 82,520 hectares of land as against the targeted area of 70,600 hectares. A total of 55,375 tonnes of hybrid bajra was produced as against a target of 70,100 tonnes by cultivating the crop in 50,150 hectares as against the targeted area of 63,500 hectares.

Among other cereals, the district produced 770 tonnes of jowar as against a target of 1,828 tonnes, followed by 1,305 tonnes of maize as against a target of 6,420 tonnes.

Production of foxtail millet (navane) came down to 13 tonnes as against the target of 210 tonnes. The district produced 15,850 tonnes of pulses against the target of 13,256 tonnes. It produced 7,160 tonnes of toor as against a target of 8,330 tonnes, 447 tonnes of green gram as against a target of 3,835 tonnes and 205 tonnes of horse gram as against a target of 235 tonnes.

The production of cowpea was highest among cereals as the production was 8,000 tonnes as against a target of 825 tonnes.

However, the production of oilseeds was reduced by almost 50 per cent owing to lack of rain. The target of production was 72,000 tonnes of oilseeds from 1.26 lakh hectares. But production was 34,745 tonnes, including 6,430 tonnes of groundnut, 25,980 tonnes of sunflower, 1,245 tonnes of sesame and 1,100 tonnes of castor.
