110th birth anniversary of the poet celebrated

DHARWAD: Along with the works of Da.Ra. Bendre, places in Dharwad, including its lakes and ponds that influenced him, should be preserved, Jnanapeeth award-winner U.R. Ananthamurthy has said.

He was speaking at a function organised to mark the 110th birth anniversary celebrations of D.R. Bendre at Bendre Bhavan on Tuesday evening. The `Da. Ra. Bendre Award' presentation ceremony was also held. "The works of Bendre are replete with the social, cultural and literary milieu of Dharwad.

An attempt to preserve places closely connected to Bendre and his works will certainly help in understanding his works better. The endeavour will be like handing over a treasure to the next generation", Dr. Ananthamurthy said.

He likened the works of Bendre to an epic that introduces and gives picturesque details of Dharwad, the place where the poet grew up. He recalled his association with the poet and his works and the impact it has made on him.

He compared the works of several Kannada poets with those of Da.Ra. Bendre.

Dr. Ananthamurthy conferred the `Da. Ra. Bendre Award' for 2004-05 on critic G.S. Amur and the Bendre Award for 2005-06 on Karnataka Sangha, Shimoga. The award carries a cash prize of Rs. 25,000.
