Construction of buildings for Circuit Benches to start soon
SHIMOGA: Minister for Primary and Secondary Education Basavaraj Horatti said here on Saturday that he will convene the meeting of leaders of political parties, legal experts, educationists and others after the legislative session to discuss steps to check sexual harassment of girls by teachers.
He told presspersons that tackling cases at an individual level will not solve the problem as they may result, at the most, in conviction.
"What is required is a multi-pronged approach, including moral orientation of teachers to put an end to this menace," he said adding that a small section of three lakh teachers in the primary and secondary schools tarnish the image of the teaching community by indulging in sexual harassment of girls.
He suggested that the meetings of the School Development and Maintenance Committees of the government primary and secondary schools should be held at least once in three months.
Mr. Horatti, who also holds the Law portfolio, said that the tender process for the construction of the building of the High Court Circuit Bench in Dharwad will be corrected before commencement of work in June.
He hoped that the functioning of the Circuit Bench will start temporarily in the existing WALMI building once the construction work starts in June.
He said that there is no paucity of funds for the construction of the building as the government has earmarked Rs. 66 crores for it.
Mr. Horatti said that Rs. 20 crores set apart by the previous government for this purpose could not be spent. He said that he had taken the special care to ensure that the funds did not lapse.
