Mangalore MP succeeds Jagadish Shettar
BANGALORE: D.V. Sadananda Gowda, MP for Mangalore, is the new President of the State unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party. He succeeds Jagadish Shettar, who has been appointed Minister for Revenue.
Mr. Sadananda Gowda will assume office on Saturday. He was elected two times to the Legislative Assembly from Puttur in Dakshina Kannada before being elected to the Lok Sabha in 2004. He began his political career as a member of the erstwhile Jan Sangh, was President of the party's Sullia Assembly segment, Dakshina Kannada BJP Yuva Morcha President, Dakshina Kannada BJP Vice-President, State BJP Yuva Morcha Secretary (1983-88), State BJP Secretary (2003-04) and national Secretary of the party.
He was elected to the Assembly in 1994 and 1999. He became deputy leader of the BJP group in his second term as MLA. He served in various committees of the State legislature.
Born in 1953, Mr. Sadananda Gowda hails from the Devaragunda family of Mandekulu village of Sullia taluk.
He graduated in science from St. Philomena's College, Puttur. He obtained a degree in law from Vaikunta Baliga College of Law in Udupi.
In 1976, he started practising law in Sullia and Puttur. He was a public prosecutor for a brief period in Sirsi in Uttara Kannada district. He is married and has a son studying engineering. His other son, who was a medical student, died in a road accident.
Mr. Sadananda Gowda served as Vice-President of South Canara District Cooperative Credit Bank, Mangalore; President of Sullia Primary Land Development Bank; and Director of Central Arecanut and Cocoa Marketing and Processing Cooperative Ltd (CAMPCO), Mangalore.
