MANGALORE: Former Vice-Chancellor of Manipal Academy of Higher Education and medical scientist Belle Monappa Hegde has been nominated by the Bihar Government to head the State Health Society, according to a notification.
The society has been formed at the initiative of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to look into the healthcare infrastructure available in that State, and it will suggest ways of upgrading facilities. Hospitals, nursing homes and clinics in Bihar will come under the purview of the society, which has eminent medical administrators and practitioners.
Dr. Hegde is a medical educationist and author of several books on medical practice and ethics. He told The Hindu he was invited to inaugurate a conference in Bihar sometime ago, and Mr. Nitish Kumar was the chief guest. Dr. Hegde spoke on healthcare reforms at the conference.
The next day, Mr. Kumar and the Health Minister of Bihar called on Dr. Hegde at the hotel where he was staying, and urged him to help the Bihar Government improve the healthcare system in the State.
