Surgery was performed at St. John's Hospital

Bangalore: Doctors at St. John's Medical College Hospital gave a new lease of life to 70-year-old Kamalamma when they conducted a complicated surgery to rectify a rare condition - a tumour in the heart.

Kamalamma was admitted to the hospital with sudden onset of breathlessness. When the problem was investigated, the tumour was detected.

"She was found to have a tumour occupying one whole chamber of the heart on the left side, which prevented flow of pure blood from the heart to the body. The tumour was pressing on a heart valve causing leakage of the valve on that side. She also had blockages in the blood vessels of the heart. She underwent an operation, which included removal of the tumour, repair of the valve leak and a bypass surgery," Satish Kini, consultant cardiothoracic and vascular surgeon at the hospital, who performed the operation, told The Hindu.Using a CT angiogram made the investigation safe for the patient than a conventional angiogram and the diagnosis was more accurate, he said.

He said that tumours of the heart were very rare and if they were associated with other problems such as a valve leakage and blockage of the blood vessels, the surgery could be very complicated and posed a challenge. The operation lasted five hours.

"Even in hospitals abroad, which handle many cardiac-related problems, such cases of tumour in the heart are seen probably once in many years. It is for the first time that we have examined such a case in this hospital," Dr. Kini said.

Since the patient was a senior citizen and could not afford to pay for the surgery and the treatment for her condition, most of her treatment cost was met by the hospital administration. "We did not want to lose this opportunity to perform a complicated surgery for such a rare condition," Dr. Kini added.
