Rasta roko staged in protest against death of two students in road accident

HUBLI: Several college students staged a "rasta roko" for some time on Friday protesting against what they termed the negligence of the police in implementing road safety measures.

The ABVP had organised the protest in the wake of the death of two students in an accident near Kadasiddheshwar College on the old national highway on Thursday.

Another student was injured in the accident.

The protestors gathered in front of the Kadasiddheshwar College and raised slogans against the negligent attitude of the police. Students urged the police to take steps to erect speed breakers and road dividers on the old national highway, especially near schools and colleges.

They urged the municipal corporation to asphalt the road leading to Chetana College and urged the North Western Karnataka Road Transport Corporation to ensure regular city bus service.

Addressing the protestors, ABVP state associate secretary Mahendra Kautal urged the authorities to install speed governors in buses of NWKRTC and Bendre Transport Service.

He urged the Regional Transport authroties concerned to conduct camps at colleges in the city to issue driving licenses to eligible students.

D. Prakash, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order), promised the students that requisite measures would be taken.

Officials of NWKRTC who visited the spot promised to install speed governors and ensure city bus facility. The RTO also assured to hold camps for issuing driving licenses to students.

ABVP members Suhas Kalghatgi, Ajay Joshi, Vadiraj Kulkarni, Mahesh Chikkavirmath, Sudip Singh Rajput, Akshata, Amita, Priya and others led the agitation.

On Thursday evening, two students of Chetana College Srinivas Datta Homkar (18) and Shreyas Atul Guttal (18) were killed and another injured when a speeding truck hit two motorcycles near the Kadasiddheshwar College.

The injured Naveen Chandrashekhar Konaraddi who is a student of the same college is undergoing treatment in a hospital here.

The driver of the truck Abdul Gafur Ahmedsab Mujavar has been arrested. A case has been registered at Hubli Traffic (North) Police station.
