Kavitha Memorial Award presented to Meera Naik

MYSORE: She has been a crusader of women's rights and has opposed the harassment of women.

Meera Naik has been an active member of Samata Vedike, an organisation that fights for the cause of women.

In recognition of her services rendered in the field of women's empowerment and uplift, the Yashoda Ragow Trust bestowed the Kavitha Memorial Award for 2006 on Ms. Naik at a function in Mysore on Monday.

The trust identifies woman personalities each year for their contribution in their chosen field for presenting the award.

Ms. Naik, who started her career as a high school teacher, has been involved in various academic and social activities, especially in the field of women's empowerment.

Ms. Naik has been involved in the development of curriculum for high school children besides taking active interest in theatre and film related activities.

She has acted in "Kankana" and "Nakkala Rajakumari," two award-winning films.
