3,000 contract workers to stage dharna from July 24

Bangalore: The United Trade Union Centre (Lenin-Sarani) and the Socialist Unity Centre of India (SUCI) have extended their support to the contract workers of Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Ltd. (KPTCL).

Over 3,000 contract workers have decided to stage a dharna from July 24 to protest against the unjust termination of their services.

According to a recent order by the KPTCL management, their services would be automatically terminated on expiry of their contract.

`Hire and fire'

A press release issued here on Wednesday said that the move to terminate the services of the contract workers amounted to the policy of "hire and fire".

The families of the workers, who were serving KPTCL in over 600 sub-stations for over a decade, would be pushed to destitution.

The move was arbitrary, high-handed and indicative of the inhuman labour practices under the globalisation-privatisation regime, the release said.

The two organisations had urged the KPTCL management and the Government to rescind the order and regularise the services of contract employees.

Pressure

They had urged the workers of their affiliated unions and other central trade unions to pressure the Government to desist from going ahead with the "anti-employee" move.
