BANGALORE: Heavy discharge of water from the reservoirs in Maharashtra after torrential rains there has flooded 159 villages in five border districts of the State.

Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswmay told presspersons that 3,64,369 people in those villages in Belgaum, Bagalkot, Bijapur, Gulbarga, and Raichur districts were affected. The villages had been inundated following heavy discharge from the reservoirs in Maharasthra into Bhima and Krishna rivers. People in five villages in Bagalkot and 36 in Belgaum districts had been marooned. The Government had pressed 75 boats into service to rescue people to safe places in the five districts. He said Rs. 3 crore had been released to Bagalkot district, Rs. 5 crore to Belgaum, Rs. 2 crore each to Bijapur and Gulbarga districts and Rs. 1 crore to Raichur.
