SHIMOGA: The Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS) has urged the Government to offer the minimum support price for paddy and open a purchase centre for maize in Shimoga district.
In a memorandum presented to Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa here on Tuesday, KRRS working president H.R. Basavarajappa said it was estimated that about 3.55 tonnes of paddy could be grown in an area of 1.05 lakh hectares and 1.75 lakh tonnes of maize in an area of 55.7 hectares.
He said the Government should offer the minimum support price for paddy as the present market price was about Rs. 80 less than the support price. Farmers would suffer heavy losses if they sold their produce at the market price.
He also demanded that the purchase centre be opened immediately as the harvesting of paddy had already begun.
