Kateel directs officials to issue foodgrains to her

MANGALORE: The officials of the Department of Food and Civil Supplies were caught in a quandary at a public grievances meeting chaired by MP Nalin Kumar Kateel here on Thursday when Jayanti (67) narrated her plight.

The very appearance of Ms. Jayanti had convinced Mr. Kateel and the officials that she was eligible for the below poverty line (BPL) ration card. But three years have elapsed since she was issued with an above poverty line (APL) ration card, deprived of the 20-kg rice a month facilicty. The MP summoned the officials of the Food and Civil Supplies Department and warned them of initiating punitive action. Ms. Jayanti told presspersons: “I do not want the BPL card to avail any scheme. I just want rice for my family.” She said that she had lost her husband and was living in Babugudde area of Attavara here with her quasi-employed son and his two daughters.

Mr. Kateel directed the officials to instruct the ration shop owner in Attavara to start issuing the rations as per BPL classification with immediate effect. He said that he had come across over 3,000 families having been wrongly classified as APL. He received two more complaints of similar nature on Thursday.

In all, he received 14 applications from the people.

Mr. Kateel said that except during July, when he was likely to be attending Parliament sessions in New Delhi, he would conduct grievance meetings every Tuesday.
