Rs. 232 crore for Suvarna Soudha
BANGALORE: The State Cabinet has decided to establish a university in Davangere that will cover colleges in Davangere and Chitradurga districts. The colleges now come under Kuvempu University, Shimoga.
Briefing presspersons on the decisions taken by the Cabinet on Thursday, Minister for Home V.S. Acharya said the Karnataka University Act would be amended to set up the university on 170 acres.
About 20,000 students would come under the purview of the new university.
It was decided to sanction Rs. 232 crore for the construction of “Suvarna Soudha” in Belgaum, on the lines of the Vidhana Soudha. The construction would be completed in one-and-a-half-years.
An engineering college would be shifted from Bellary city to Hoovinahadagali in the district for the benefit of students. Earlier, the Government had shifted the college from Hoovinahadagali to Bellary city citing shortage of students, Dr. Acharya said.
It was decided to bring the Coastal Development Authority under the jurisdiction of the Planning Department, and Rs. 2 crore had been sanctioned to the authority initially.
To strengthen the Coastal Security Force, the Cabinet approved recruitment of 60 police personnel of various ranks. It was decided to provide government guarantee to the Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Drainage Board to borrow a Rs. 150-crore loan from SyndicateBank and Corporation Bank to implement water supply and drainage works in several towns in the State. A decision was taken to increase 450 seats in para-medical courses in 17 institutions in the State, Dr. Acharya said.
Sources in the Secretariat said the Cabinet cleared a Rs. 354-crore ring road project for Bellary and Rs. 18.90 crore drinking water scheme for Sandur town.
It also sanctioned Rs. 9.76 crore for land acquisition and shifting of utilities in Tumkur for a road between Tumkur and Honnavar, they added.
