Belgaum: The zilla panchayat has claimed to have completed 4,694 projects by spending Rs. 33 crore under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) in the district till March.

However, the response to the ambitious scheme aimed at generating employment in rural areas is less than expected. Zilla panchayat president Nazir Ahmed Nadaf said here on Monday that the authorities concerned should strive to implement the scheme effectively.

He said the officials had been asked to expedite work on the projects taken up under the scheme and extend its benefits to unemployed persons in villages.

He underscored the need for proper coordination between various departments, particularly Forest, Irrigation, Watershed Development and Agriculture, to make the scheme successful.
