Bijapur: District in-charge Minister Govind Karjol has said that the State Government will be urged to declare Bijapur drought-hit if it did not receive adequate rainfall in the next week.

Addressing presspersons here on Saturday, Mr. Karjol said that though the district received sufficient rainfall in the beginning of the kharif season, it did not receive expected rainfall in July. Since the district had already completed 79 per cent of sowing , farmers would incur heavy losses if it did not rain. .

Mr. Karjol said that officials had been instructed to study the situation in all the five taluks of the district and submit a detailed report to the Deputy Commissioner as soon as possible.

He said 64 villages in the district were facing acute shortage of drinking water and steps had been taken to supply water to these villages in tankers. The authorities concerned had taken over 15 borewells of farmers on payment of charges to provide water to villages, he added.

Later, the Minister went to Indi and Sindagi taluks, where farmers are staging an indefinite fast in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office demanding the release of compensation for uncrushed sugarcane for 2006-07. Mr. Karjol said that the issue had been discussed with the Chief Minister and the amount would be released in a fortnight.
