Bangalore: Several doctors were felicitated at a function held here on Sunday to mark Doctors’ Day. The Doctors’ Community of Bangalore West had organised it. India celebrates the Doctors’ Day on July 1, the birth and death anniversary of freedom fighter and renowned physician Dr. B.C. Roy.

Sudarshan Ballal, Director of Manipal Institute of Nephro Urology , the chief guest, said: “I am proud to be a doctor and a part of this fraternity which renders noble service to society. Unfortunately, not many youngsters today take up medicine as a career as it entails a lot of hard work.”

Besides Dr. Ballal, other doctors who were felicitated on the occasion are: surgeon Nagendrappa; gynaecologist and founder of Pragathi Nursing Home Sarala Shetty; physician S.C. Shakarlingaiah; founder of apathological lab in Bangalore West Shashikala D. Kini; physician K.S. Gowda; orthopaedic surgeon Bhagirath; founders of Shanbhag Nursing Home Pramod Shanbhag and Geetha Shanbhag; and cardiologist and Vice-Chancellor of Bangalore University N. Prabhu Dev.

In his acceptance speech, Dr. Nagendrappa said: “Even though we are practising from many years, there are times when we commit mistakes without our knowledge. It becomes our responsibility to learn from them.”

Dr. Prabhu Dev said that doctors should be appreciated for their dedicated service to society. Alluding to cases of assault on doctors by patients’ families, he said it is the responsibility of the Government to protect doctors in such situations. “We put in long hours of work for the sake of society. People remember doctors when they are in need of them but they do not extend support to doctors when doctors need it,” he said.
