BANGALORE: Eight men barged into the house of Ravindra Reddy, a land developer, in Varthur, on Tuesday night when there was no power in the area and looted gold from the family. While fleeing, they threw an explosive substance to discourage pursuit.

Mr. Reddy’s wife Aruna and six others were at home and around 8 p.m., their neighbour Jayalakshmi came to the house to watch television. The power went off shortly and a few minutes later, eight men who the family said spoke Assamese, entered the house. They threatened everybody present, herded them into a corner and snatched five gold chains, eight gold bangles, three gold rings and four mobile phones.

“While leaving, they exploded a few packets containing sulphur to scare the family and disappeared as the house filled with smoke,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (South East) B.N.S. Reddy.

The police recovered two mobile phones which the culprits had abandoned near the house.

Robbed

Two men, including an autorickshaw driver, robbed an employee of a travel agency of Rs. 17,000 cash near Ramakrishna Lodge in Upparpet police station limits on Tuesday night. The police said Vijayakumar, who stays in Vyalikaval 11th B Cross, left to the Railway station in the afternoon to book a ticket to Patna. Then he took an autorickshaw and collected money from a client in Cottonpet. He was proceeding to another place in the same autorickshaw.

Near Ramakrishna Lodge, the autorickshaw driver and the man travelling by the vehicle hit Vijayakumar and snatched the bag containing Rs. 17,000.

Arrested

The Rajajinagar police arrested Suresh (23) of Dayanand Nagar for his alleged involvement in six cases of chain snatching and burglary. The police said Suresh was targeting women going alone in morning.

The police have recovered 158 grams of gold chains. Cases against Suresh were registered in Rajajinagar and Srirampuram police station limits, the police said.

The Byappanahalli police arrested Santosh Kumar (35) and Anthony (32) for their alleged involvement in several cases of burglary and vehicle thefts.

There were cases against the accused in K.G. Halli, Hennur, Commercial Street, Ramamurthy Nagar, Byappanahalli, Ulsoor and Talghattapura police station limits. The police have recovered 250 grams of gold ornaments and an autorickshaw.
