Science quiz, exhibition contest to begin from this month-end

The Science and Technology Department is organising it for students

HUBLI: The State-level science quiz for high school students and science exhibition competition for degree college students being organised by the Department of Science and Technology will begin by the end of this month. It will conclude in January 2010.

Speaking to presspersons on Monday after releasing brochures and pamphlets on the competitions at the PC Jabin Science College in Hubli, Minister for Science and Technology and Fisheries Anand Asnotikar said that the competitions being held for the third year, were aimed at building scientific temper and competitive spirit among students.

The competitions are being held in association with the Karnataka Rajya Vijnana Parishat, the Directorate of State Education Research and Training and the Department of Public Instruction.

Mr. Asnotikar said that the science quiz would be held separately for rural and urban students.

The taluk or education block-level competitions would be held in the State on August 29. The theme of the science exhibition would be “Save Planet Earth” and it would begin in the second or third week of September.

Giving details on the schedule for the competitions, State Convenor of Karnataka Rajya Vijnana Parishat S.V. Sankanur said that the district-level science quiz would be held on September 15, and the final competition would be in the second week of December.

He said that the university (divisional)-level science exhibition competition would be held in the second or third week of September and the final competition would be held in the second or third week of December.

Prof Sankanur said there would be cash prizes for the winners of quiz competition at the district and State-level and cash prizes for winners of science exhibition at the division and State-level.

He said that the parishat would request the State Government to increase the prize amount as the participants, especially those taking part in the exhibition, would have to spend money for designing exhibits.

Earlier, the Minister released the brochures on the quiz and exhibition contest and the pamphlets brought out to publicise the event.

KLE Society Director Shankaranna Munavalli, Deputy Director of Public Instruction V.A. Machakanur and principal of PC Jabin Science College V.N. Kinagi, professor S.B. Hiremath and member of Vijnana Parishat B.S. Soppin were present.
