They are mostly forest dwellers demanding Scheduled Tribe tag

The Uttara Kannada district Kunabi Samaj Seva Sangh has arranged a meeting of Kunabi community in Kajubag in Karwar on Friday. Kunabis, who are forest dwellers, are demanding the status of Scheduled Tribes.

Kunabis stay mainly in the forests of Uttara Kannada district, Goa, and Maharashtra. According to community leaders, their population was about 75,000.The members of this community were identified with different names such as “Kunbi”, “Marathi”, “Kudabi”, and “Kumbri”.The main profession of the community was agriculture.


Literacy level of the community was very low, the community leaders said.The Kunabis said they were neglected because they were minorities. To press their demands the meeting is arranged in Karwar.


Uttara Kannada district in-charge Minister Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri will inaugurate the meet.

Anant Kumar Hegde, MP; Sunil Hedge, MLA; S.L. Ghotnekar, MLC; Pratap, and Singh Velip, secretary of the government of Goa; will participate in the meeting.A procession of the community leaders will be taken out from Maladevi ground prior to the meeting.
