It is also the responsibility of NGOs: Rameshwar Thakur

BANGALORE: Addressing the development needs of the country’s children is not only the responsibility of the Government but also the voluntary service of society as caring for the development of children has been an everlasting national mission, Governor Rameshwar Thakur has said.

He was speaking after inaugurating the Hattara Habba, 10th anniversary, of the Girija Shastri memorial service organisation Adamya Chetana here on Sunday. The objective of the flagship education programme Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan was to ensure free and compulsory education for all children in the age group of six to 14.

Applauding the efforts of Bangalore South MP Ananth Kumar and his wife, Tejaswini Ananth Kumar, behind the success of Adamya Chetana, Mr. Thakur said that he had also established a charitable trust in the name of his mother Hari Devi in 1965.

Mr. Ananth Kumar said that The Hindu was in a way responsible for naming the organisation as Adamya Chetana. When she died in 1997, The Hindu, in its obituary note, described Girija Shastri as an “invincible spirit”, which meant Adamya Chetana, he said. Mr. Ananth Kumar said that voluntary organisations should ensure a better tomorrow for children.
