MYSORE: The Lalithakala awards for the year 2007 will be presented during the national-level dance drama festival, “Natyanjali 2007”, which will be held at Kalamandira from Sunday.

Sri Shivaratri Deshikendra Swamiji of Suttur Math will present the “Lalithakala Ratna” awards which carries a bronze idol of Lord Nataraja and a citation.

The winners this year include Illena Citaristi, an Italian born dancer and a disciple of Odissi maestro Kelucharan Mahopatra.

She settled in India over two decades ago and has involved herself in research on Odissi.

V. Balasubramanyam, founder of Jayamangala School of Music and Dance at Maryland, U.S., who has organised international unity concerts in music and dance, will also receive the award.

The other recipient is S.R. Krishnamurthy, an art critic from Mysore.

H.R. Nagendra, Vice-Chancellor of S. Vyasa University, Bangalore, will be conferred with the “Yoga Ratna” award for his contribution to Yoga based on the Bhagavad Gita and Patanjali Yoga Sutra.

The function will be followed by a Bharathanatayam performance of “Astalakshmi Vaibhavam” by Revathi Ramachandran and troupe from Chennai and a Kuchipudi performance of “Sarvagna Shankara” which is based on the life of Adi Sankaracharya. The other dance drama includes an Odissi performance of “Chitrangada” from the Mahabharatha.

This will be a treat for the connoisseurs of art and culture in Mysore, according to the secretary of Sri Lalithakala Academy Foundation B.S.S. Rao.
