Minority communities heave a sigh of relief, says Congress leader

MANGALORE: Dakshina Kannada unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday described the withdrawal of support by the Janata Dal (Secular) to them for forming the government as “betrayal of the people by that party”.

Reacting to today’s political development, K. Monappa Bhandary, president of the district unit, alleged that H.D. Deve Gowda, president of Janata Dal (S), indulged in “blackmailing” their party. In the last Assembly election, BJP had emerged as the single largest party. It meant that people wanted the BJP to form the government. “Mr. Gowda has blackmailed the people of the State by putting forth some conditions” to the BJP for a coalition government. “The Janata Dal (S) has cheated the people,” he added.

Mr. Bhandary claimed that if his party had been given an opportunity, it would have given a “good administration”.

K. Rama Bhat, former BJP MLA, said he had suspected the attitude of the Janata Dal (S), particularly of Mr. Gowda. Earlier, Mr. Gowda had betrayed Ramakrishna Hegde. “He has proved what he is”, Mr. Bhat said. He said that he would not be surprised if the Janata Dal (S) joined hands with the Congress to form the next government and added that it would be better to go for fresh elections.

Congress reaction

B. Ramanath Rai, president, Dakshina Kannada unit of the Congress, said: “It is a blessing in disguise for the people of Karnataka in general and Dakshina Kannada district in particular. The minorities of the district will heave a sigh of relief as a party, which was talking about adopting the ‘Gujarat model’, had not come to power. BJP ascending the seat of power had placed seeds of doubts in the minds of minority communities about their welfare,” he said.
