DHARWAD: The stage is set for the three-day Dharwad Zilla Utsav, which will see participation from close to 2,000 local artistes apart from artistes of national and international repute.

Preparations for the utsav, to be held in Hubli-Dhawad and Kundagol at 20 venues simultaneously, have been completed and the countdown has begun for the colourful inauguration ceremony on Friday evening, which will be held at the Karnatak College Grounds in Dharwad.

The inaugural ceremony would be preceded by a colourful procession, in which 40 troupes of artistes, 35 tableaux and scores of school children will take part. Apart from the cultural troupes, 40 contingents of NCC, Bharat Seva Dal, Scouts and Guides and various schools will be part of the procession.

Pandit Hari Prasad Chourasia and Pt. Vishwa Mohan Butt will perform on the first day of the utsav. While Pt. Chourasia’s programme is scheduled to take place at Dr. Mallikarjun Mansur Kalabhavan in Dharwad after 9.15 p.m., Pt. Butt will be performing at Sawai Gandharva Hall in Hubli at the same time. Although the connoisseurs of music would be disappointed over the programmes of Pt. Butt and Pt. Chourasia being held at the same time at different venues, they would have a lot to relish in the next two days of the cultural extravaganza. Gundecha Brothers and Pt. Tejendra Narayan Majumdar are the other artistes of national fame who will be performing during the utsav.

Apart from events such as music, dance, folklore, painting, sculpture, seminars and poetry recitals, the Dharwad Zilla Utsav will have added attractions such as Kannada film festival and mushaira, qawwali and Sufi music this time.

Sopanam troupe from Thiruvananthapuram will be performing in both Hubli and Dharwad.

The district administration, which had set up 10 committees to oversee various arrangements including selection of artistes to scheduling the programmes and other preparations, has done extensive work to take the message of the utsav to other areas in the district.

It has set up information counters in the twin cities to provide information on the details of the events and the venues.
