Elders in a Hassan village call for boycott of the boy’s family
Girl’s family made to pay a fine of Rs. 20,000
HASSAN: Chikkamathighatta in Dandiganahalli hobli in Chennaraypatna taluk in Hassan district was a sleepy village.
It is part of Hassan Lok Sabha Constituency represented by the former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda. It has 140 families in which five belonged to Kuruba community while 11 belonged to Dalit community and the rest are from Vokkaliga community.
But all was not the same when Ravi, a Kuruba, married Shanta, daughter of Lakshme Gowda.
But the matter became complicated when Shanta filed a petition against her father in Chennaraypatna court demanding share in property about 10 months ago.
When the situation reached a flash point, Shanta and Ravi left for Bangalore in search of work. But Ravi’s brothers are facing social boycott.
The panchayat ruled that the people of the village should boycott Range Gowda, Thimme Gowda, Ravi and Kenche Gowda when Shanta refused to withdraw the petition.
If any body talks to them, they have to pay a fine of Rs. 1,000 to the panchayat. The other condition is they should not be engaged in agriculture work.
Ravi and Shanta got married in Bangalore and the couple returned to the village in 1999. According to the villagers, about 15 years ago, there was an inter-caste marriage in the village and the village panchayat imposed a fine on both the families. They paid the fine.
The two families insisted that the families of Ravi and Shanta should also be fined.
In September 2006, elders in the village at the panchayat, imposed a fine of Rs. 4,000 to Ravi’s brother Kenche Gowda and Rs. 3,000 fine to Shanta’s father Lakseme Gowda.
Enraged by this, Shanta filed a petition in Chennaraypatna court against her father demanding her share in property.
This complicated the matter. The panchayat met again and directed Shanta to withdraw the case.
Earlier, Shanta was working as a cook in the village in midday meal scheme but she was relieved of the job in May this year.
After this, Ravi and Shanta left for Bangalore in search of a job.
