BANGALORE: In Karnataka, Home Guards — the part-time civilian reserve military — will soon be equipped with civil engineering skills that will help them assist the military or the police better at times of emergency.

Kicking off a three-month course in “Civil Engineering Practices/ Skills required in disaster management” on Monday, K. Koshy, Director-General, National Disaster Response Force and Civil Defence, Ministry of Home Affairs, said, “When constructing a building it is important to know whether the soil will support such a structure, if the building materials used are conducive to the general climate of the area.”

One of the reasons training courses were chalked out for Home Guards was because at times of emergency, it was hard to mobilise them at one given point, said R. Srikumar, Chairman and Managing Director of Karnataka State Police Housing Corporation.
