Adequate rainfall has increased groundwater level

Drinking water problem likely to ease

Vani Vilas reservoir has received good inflow

Chitradurga: The recent rainfall in Chitradurga district has helped fill almost all small and medium ponds.

The district has over 80,000 borewells and people expect most of them to get recharged. According to the Department of Geology, groundwater levels have already increased substantially in a few taluks such as Hiriyur and Hosadurga. “The rain will recharge borewells, which in turn will help not only farmers but also the people, as drinking water supply will be augmented,” said geologist Prabhu Swamy.

He said this would also reduce the fluoride content in water.

Drinking water

Apart from tanks, Vani Vilas, a major reservoir of the district, has received seven feet of water.

Since it is also used to meet the drinking water needs of Chitradurga city, people might not face problems in the coming days.

The Rangayyana Durga Project of Molakalmur taluk, which had not received water for many years now, has filled up. Though, this will not prove adequate for irrigation, it will certainly increase the watertable in the surrounding areas. Similar is the case with tanks in the city. The Chandravalli tank has been filled to the brim, and the historic Sante Honda has also received substantial quantity of water through internal routes. Other tanks such as Sihineer Honda and Akka-Tangi Honda have also received large quantities of water. As more rainfall is expected, the extent of water storage may increase.
