Bangalore: Aashayein Foundation, a Bangalore-based non-governmental organisation formed by a group of young people in May to empower underprivileged children through education, is organising an event, Chhoti si Asha. The event will celebrate the admission of 64 children to school and also showcase their untapped singing talent. The event is also meant to mark the success of two projects of Aashayein: Bacche Mann ke Sacche and Sur Tarang.

The first project attempts to create and sustain educational opportunities for children between the ages of six and 16 from economically weaker sections of urban society. One of the main objectives of the project is to conduct surveys to identify children from slums who do not go to school and get them admitted in a school in the area they live in.

The second programme, Sur Tarang, is intended to showcase the singing talents of children who have never had the opportunity to do so. In this project, Aashayein organises musical competitions and performances to find budding Kishore Kumars and Lata Mangeshkars among these children.

“Initially all of us were involved with just serving breakfast to children at various ashrams across the city,” the young members of Aashayein say. But within a short period, the foundation expanded their programmes to include donating clothes, distributing books, celebrating the birthdays of children, teaching and enrolling poor children in schools. Now the group has 300 members.

Aashayein Foundation also seeks the participation of the public, who they say can help identify children who do not go to school and inform the organisation through its website,

Chhoti si Asha will take place on October 7, between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., at Ganesh Bagh, Bhagwan Mahaveer Road. For details, email or call Dharmesh on 99002-16731
