Sale of liquor has been banned from September 27 to 30

MANGALORE: Campaigning for elections to urban local bodies in the district should end by 7 a.m. on Wednesday, 48 hours before the commencement of polling, Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner M. Maheshwara Rao has said.

Speaking to presspersons here on Monday, he said candidates could, however, resort to door-to-door campaigning after public campaigning came to an end. Unlike in general elections, where campaigning ends 48 hours before the close of polling, in elections to urban local bodies, it ends 48 hours before polling begins.

Order issued

Orders banning the conduct of public functions from 7 a.m. on September 26 have been issued. Polling is scheduled to start at 7 a.m. on September 28, Mr. Maheshwara Rao said. The sale of liquor has also been banned from September 27 to 30 in view of the elections to local bodies, he added.

Elected unopposed

Mr. Rao said Dinesh Rai of the Congress had been elected unopposed in ward number 14 of the Ullal City Municipal Council (CMC). He is a candidate from the Backward Class-B category. He is the only contestant to have been elected unopposed in the district, he added.

Mr. Rao said 556 candidates will be contesting in the remaining 188 wards.

As many as 136 vehicles have been deployed to transport personnel to ensure smooth conduct of elections, he said.
